Derek Carr is an American professional football player known for having served as a quarterback for the Oakland Raiders and New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). Derek Carr attended the Bakersfield Christian High School which is a private, college-preparatory, nondenominational Christian school. He also studied at Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas.

He grew up in Bakersfield, California before his family shifted base to Sugar Land, Texas, in 2002. That was when his older brother, David Carr, was selected as the first overall draft pick of the then-expansion Houston Texans.

Derek Carr’s high school football career began by playing on the freshman team during his first year at Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas. During his sophomore year, he became a backup quarterback on the varsity team. He became a preseason quarterback because another quarterback met with an injury.

He finished his junior year at Clements High School with 1,622 yards and 16 touchdowns and sophomore year with 1,246 yards and 12 touchdowns.

With his amazing performances in his junior year, Derek Carr was heavily recruited by the likes of Fresno State, SMU, Boise State, the University of Southern California, UCLA, and the University of Utah. He eventually decided to stick out with the California State University, Fresno.

On October 29, 2008, he became the “National Football Player of the Week” chosen by ESPN RISE after passing for 441 yards and 3 touchdowns in a game against Tehachapi High School.

He was also honored as the “2008 All-Area Football Player of the Year” by The Bakersfield Californian.

As Derek Carr wrapped up his school career, he was selected as the “National Player of the Year” by the National Private Schools Athletic Association in 2009.

During his college football years, he won the 2013 CFPA Elite QB Award for his performance over 3 seasons at Fresno State.

In 2013, he was awarded the Sammy Baugh Trophy. It is a trophy awarded annually by the Touchdown Club of Columbus to the nation’s top collegiate passer.

During his time with the Fresno State, Derek Carr wore the number 4 jersey in order to pay homage to his favorite NFL player, Brett Favre.

The Oakland Raiders selected him as their 4th quarterback of the year in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year, $5.37 million contract with a $2.2 million signing bonus with the team.

In his 2014 season with the Oakland Raiders, he became the first rookie quarterback in their history to start as a season opener and was also the only rookie quarterback from the 2014 draft class to start in Week 1.

Derek Carr suffered a high ankle sprain and MCL sprain during a game against the Miami Dolphins at Wembley Stadium during the 2014 season.

He wrapped up his rookie season with 3,270 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions and also became the second Raiders’ quarterback to start all 16 games after quarterback Rich Gannon in 2002.

He finished his 2015 season ranking 100th by his fellow players on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2016.

On June 22, 2017, the Oakland Raiders extended Carr’s deal with a five-year, $125 million contract extension with $40 million fully guaranteed, $70 million in total guarantees, and a $12.5 million signing bonus.

As far as his personal life is concerned, he is a very devoted Christian with a deep faith in God.

Derek Carr is one of the few players in the NFL history to throw at least 80 TD passes in his first three seasons.

In March 2023, he signed a $150 million deal with New Orleans Saints. The deal reportedly included a clause guaranteeing that he won’t be traded to another team.
